    Transition in a disturbed environment

    The title of this presentation is the title of our research grant. While transition study is the objective of the work, the results to date are principally on the properties of turbulent boundary layers at low Reynolds numbers are discussed. Testing was done in a small return wind tunnel. Mean boundary layer development is given. The skin friction behavior of the turbulent points are considered. No standard laminar flow was observed. Furthermore, the turbulent mean flow data seem reasonable for the elevated disturbance levels of the tests in the sense that there is no discernible wake component to any of the profiles and that the variation of skin friction with R sub theta is consistent with zero wake strength.     This chapter addresses principles of advanced structural safety studies in association with various types of extreme and accidental events. The structural consequences of extreme conditions and accidents are inevitably volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA). Methods to model random parameters affecting such extreme conditions and accidents are presented. The importance of limit states- and risk-based approaches is emphasized to manage VUCA environments. Future trends toward advanced structural safety studies are addressed

    Ultrafast vectorial and scalar dynamics of ionic clusters: Azobenzene solvated by oxygen

    The ultrafast dynamics of clusters of trans-azobenzene anion (A–) solvated by oxygen molecules was investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The time scale for stripping off all oxygen molecules from A– was determined by monitoring in real time the transient of the A– rise, following an 800 nm excitation of A– (O2)n, where n=1–4. A careful analysis of the time-dependent photoelectron spectra strongly suggests that for n>1 a quasi-O4 core is formed and that the dissociation occurs by a bond cleavage between A– and conglomerated (O2)n rather than a stepwise evaporation of O2. With time and energy resolutions, we were able to capture the photoelectron signatures of transient species which instantaneously rise (2- for A–O2 and A·O4-·(O2)n–2 for A–(O2)n, where n=2–4. Subsequent to an ultrafast electron recombination, A– rises with two distinct time scales: a subpicosecond component reflecting a direct bond rupture of the A–-(O2)n nuclear coordinate and a slower component (1.6–36 ps, increasing with n) attributed to an indirect channel exhibiting a quasistatistical behavior. The photodetachment transients exhibit a change in the transition dipole direction as a function of time delay. Rotational dephasing occurs on a time scale of 2–3 ps, with a change in the sign of the transient anisotropy between A–O2 and the larger clusters. This behavior is a key indicator of an evolving cluster structure and is successfully modeled by calculations based on the structures and inertial motion of the parent clusters

    On the Approximability of Digraph Ordering

    Given an n-vertex digraph D = (V, A) the Max-k-Ordering problem is to compute a labeling :V[k]\ell : V \to [k] maximizing the number of forward edges, i.e. edges (u,v) such that \ell(u) < \ell(v). For different values of k, this reduces to Maximum Acyclic Subgraph (k=n), and Max-Dicut (k=2). This work studies the approximability of Max-k-Ordering and its generalizations, motivated by their applications to job scheduling with soft precedence constraints. We give an LP rounding based 2-approximation algorithm for Max-k-Ordering for any k={2,..., n}, improving on the known 2k/(k-1)-approximation obtained via random assignment. The tightness of this rounding is shown by proving that for any k={2,..., n} and constant ε>0\varepsilon > 0, Max-k-Ordering has an LP integrality gap of 2 - ε\varepsilon for nΩ(1/loglogk)n^{\Omega\left(1/\log\log k\right)} rounds of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy. A further generalization of Max-k-Ordering is the restricted maximum acyclic subgraph problem or RMAS, where each vertex v has a finite set of allowable labels SvZ+S_v \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^+. We prove an LP rounding based 42/(2+1)2.3444\sqrt{2}/(\sqrt{2}+1) \approx 2.344 approximation for it, improving on the 222.8282\sqrt{2} \approx 2.828 approximation recently given by Grandoni et al. (Information Processing Letters, Vol. 115(2), Pages 182-185, 2015). In fact, our approximation algorithm also works for a general version where the objective counts the edges which go forward by at least a positive offset specific to each edge. The minimization formulation of digraph ordering is DAG edge deletion or DED(k), which requires deleting the minimum number of edges from an n-vertex directed acyclic graph (DAG) to remove all paths of length k. We show that both, the LP relaxation and a local ratio approach for DED(k) yield k-approximation for any k[n]k\in [n].Comment: 21 pages, Conference version to appear in ESA 201

    The Effect of Audit Committee Independence on the Distribution of Earnings Levels and Changes

    This study investigates whether audit committee independence affects the distribution of earnings levels and changes. We compare the distribution of earnings levels and changes of firms with majority independent audit committees to those of firms with minority independent audit committees. We use the distribution of earnings between the two types of firms to examine whether the high frequency of small earnings increases (and/or profits) relative to small earnings decreases (and/or losses) reported by public firms will be attenuated by the existence of the independent audit committee. We expect that audit committee independence effectively monitors management\u27s discretionary behavior so that firms with majority independent audit committees have smoother earning distributions around zero than firms with minority independent audit committees. Consistent with this expectation, we find that relative to firms with majority independent audit committees, firms with minority independent audit committees (1) report fewer small earnings declines (and/or losses), and (2) report more small earnings increases (and/or profits). These results suggest that the asymmetric pattern of more small earnings increases (and/or profits) than decreases (and/or losses), first documented by Burgstahler and Dichev (1997), can be attributed to earnings management, and the discontinuity of earnings around zero can be attenuated by effective monitoring by an independent audit committee

    Analysis on the hull girder ultimate strength of a bulk carrier using simplified method based on an incremental-iterative approach

    The hull girder ultimate strength of a typical bulk carrier is analyzed using a simplified method based on an incremental-iterative approach. First, vertical bending moment is examined by seven different methods. The moment versus curvature curves and the values of the ultimate longitudinal moments at collapse states are determined for both hogging and sagging cases. Second, the ultimate strength under coupled vertical and horizontal bending moment is accounted. An interaction curve is obtained, which corresponds to the results of series of calculation for the ship hull subject to bending conditions with different angles of curvature. It is found that the interaction curve is asymmetrical because the hull cross section is not symmetrical with respect to the horizontal axis and the structural response of the elements under compression is different from that under tension due to nonlinearity caused by buckling. The angles of the resultant bending moment vector and that of the curvature vector are different in investigated cases. The interaction design equations proposed by other researches are also addressed to discuss the results presented by this study
